Silverstone Circuit announced it would use a new track layout as the British Grand Prix was saved at the last minute for the 2010 season. The revised track was initially designed for MotoGP, but when Silverstone regained the F1 race following the collapse of Donington Park’s bid, the Northamptonshire track began to explore the possibility of switching F1 to a new circuit.<\/p>\n
The Formula One Management (FOM) has approved the use of the ‘Arena’ complex for the 2010 British Grand Prix.<\/p>\n
\u00ab The new sections of the circuit were initially brought in to comply with safety regulations in MotoGP, but the complex of the \u2018Arena’ was always designed for two or four wheels, \u00bb said Silverstone’s managing director, Richard Phillips. \u00ab We have been very vigilant, working closely with the riders. It was necessary to ensure the improvement of the Silverstone circuit by taking into account the views of the riders and spectators. \u00bb<\/p>\n
The new circuit abandons the current layout at Abbey to offer a double loop in the new ‘Arena’ complex, before returning to the straight that leads to the stadium and the existing Brooklands section. F1 cars will not use the bridge and Priory corners, but many hope these changes will increase overtaking opportunities.<\/p>\n
\u00ab We must move with the times and continue to seek ways to enhance the overall experience, \u00bb added Phillips. \u00ab The new section will bring an additional dimension to Silverstone, a new challenge for the drivers and will allow fans to get closer to the action. We have a very exciting year ahead of us, with F1, MotoGP, and Superbike at Silverstone. I am very much looking forward to it. \u00bb<\/p>\n
These revisions should add 760 meters to the length of the circuit and are expected to increase the lap time by four seconds. The work on the ‘Arena’ complex is already well underway.
