The point of contention concerns the starter hole considered too wide.<\/p>\n
Indeed, such a hole located in the diffuser would allow for the creation of a sort of tunnel through which air could flow, thereby generating more downforce. This downforce would be much more consistent, especially during braking situations when the rear of the car lifts.<\/p>\n
According to Martin Whitmarsh, the McLaren team director, one should not point fingers at his team: \u00ab There are holes in the diffuser for the starter, the said hole on our car is no larger than that of last year’s world champion car (Brawn GP, editor’s note). Moreover, its size is identical to those found in four other teams. \u00bb<\/p>\n
The debate is gaining momentum. Indeed, several teams are reportedly under the FIA’s scrutiny. Since the Bahrain GP, the FIA has begun discussions on this sensitive topic with the implicated teams, namely McLaren, Mercedes, Force India, and Renault.<\/p>\n
From a regulatory standpoint, it is interesting to note that a hole in the diffuser allowing access to the engine starter is legal; however, there are no strictly defined dimensions.<\/p>\n
Article 3.12.7 stipulates: \u00ab A minimal and unique opening at the surface is permitted to allow access for the device referred to in Article 5.16 (the same one that governs the startup). \u00bb<\/p>\n
According to some sources, the FIA has clearly sent a note to all teams, setting strict dimensions for a maximum hole diameter as well as a maximum projected area.<\/p>\n
It is evident that the teams mentioned will have to make modifications to their diffusers before the free practice sessions of the next Grand Prix, which will take place in Australia, in Melbourne.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
