Friday is traditionally dedicated to finding the right setup for the rest of the weekend. That’s what Daniel Ricciardo, the third Toro Rosso driver, tried to do this morning. The Australian driver was on the track during FP1 in place of S\u00e9bastien Buemi.<\/p>\n
The Swiss driver, who returned to the wheel in the afternoon, was not able to get the maximum out of his car. Nevertheless, there is optimism for the rest of the weekend. This opinion is shared by Jaime Alguersuari, who believes that there is still room to improve the overall performance.<\/p>\n
Daniel Ricciardo \u2013 12th:<\/b><\/p>\n
There’s a little less pressure here than in Melbourne where I was very busy since it was a home race. I felt more comfortable in the cockpit today and I was able to dive into the program.<\/p>\n
\u00ab It was a productive session for me with a program similar to that in Australia, establishing a baseline for the setup. I was able to provide feedback which, hopefully, should be useful for the team, such as where the KERS should be used on the track. \u00bb<\/p>\n
\u00ab It was good for my learning of the turns as well. The first half hour, the track was a bit dirty, but obviously it will be better for the rest of the weekend. \u00bb<\/p>\n
I had already driven here in 2006 in Formula BMW, which was a long time ago. I remembered almost everything, except this time everything seemed to go 30 seconds faster!<\/p>\n
Jaime Alguersuari \u2013 13th and 10th:<\/b><\/p>\n
A good number of laps and a reasonable time in FP2 after we tried to make progress compared to this morning. We need to focus on the race because it’s the priority, unless the weather surprises us.<\/p>\n
The degradation of the tires will be the key factor here at Sepang, as we expected, so we need to focus on our performance over long stints by improving our endurance with the rear tires.<\/p>\n
Overall, I am happy with the progress we have seen today, but I am not yet 100% satisfied because I think there is room for improvement on my side and with the car as well.<\/p>\n
The heat? You have to deal with it. As long as you drink a lot and stay hydrated, it gets better and better throughout the weekend.<\/p>\n
S\u00e9bastien Buemi – 18th:<\/b><\/p>\n
\u00abI only had one session today and it didn’t go very well; however, we collected a lot of data on the longer stints as well as the shorter ones. Now we need to look closely at the numbers because I couldn’t piece everything together on the track. I had a yellow flag during what could have been my fastest lap. So in terms of lap times, it doesn’t represent our real level.<\/p>\n
\u00abWe expected to have tire degradation here and we saw a situation very different from what we had in Melbourne. However, we must remain cautious before drawing conclusions.\u00bb<\/p>\n
