The director of the Mercedes GP Petronas team, Ross Brawn, responded to the statements made by Pirelli’s motorsport manager, Paul Hembery, who would like to see the number of tires supplied to teams reduced in 2012 because some sets of tires are destroyed without having been used.<\/p>\n

The Grand Prix Drivers’ Association (GPDA) has expressed its support for Pirelli, but Brawn disagrees. He believes that if Pirelli supplies fewer tires in 2012, teams could, in extreme cases, run out of tires, which would be problematic.<\/p>\n

It’s impossible to finish every race using all tire sets. If you do that, then there could be races where, due to certain events, you might run out of tires. You’d have drivers driving with tires they’d prefer not to use because they wanted to save a set of new tires. Can this be solved with just one set? Maybe, I don’t know, Ross Brawn told Autosport.<\/p>\n

Ross Brawn also stated that the tires were one of the keys to success this season in Formula 1, thanks to their more pronounced degradation compared to Bridgestone, and he therefore sees no reason to change things.<\/p>\n

\u00abI think it went very well this year and we should be very careful before making such fundamental changes regarding the tires, because that has been one of the strengths this season – having two different compounds with a certain gap that is more. \u00bb<\/p>\n
