The Sprint race has been added to the Formula 1 calendar to bring a little more excitement and spice to the current format. Three free practice sessions, without immediate stakes for the spectator other than invisible optimization, that’s where the Sprint race can make things more attractive. The teams use the practice sessions to fine-tune their cars within an optimal performance window before qualifying and the race each weekend. With such attention to detail, this is often how the gaps between each team are reduced. What is certain is that even among the drivers, opinions differ.<\/p>\n
“If we have half a dozen of them in a season of 23-24 races, I think yes, it adds a bit of spice,” explained Daniel Ricciardo, before adding, “But I wouldn’t want to go down the Moto GP route and have it every weekend.”<\/p>\n
Max Verstappen is now resorting to sarcasm whenever the subject of sprint races is brought up, just like in his latest press conference, where he was asked about how the races have been this season. (e) “Oh, it’s been absolutely fantastic. So much fun.” And when pressed for more details, he adds, (e) “I am just so excited to do another Sprint. I completely agree.” In a way, the tone is set.<\/p>\n
Lando Norris also has mixed feelings about the format. “I’ve always liked regular race weekends, to be honest,” said the McLaren driver. “So if I could choose, I would go back to that format. But the reason is for the fans and to offer more excitement and things like that. I enjoy the challenge that FP1 and qualifying represent. I think it’s better.”<\/p>\n
“I like the fact of having only one free practice session,” said Charles Leclerc from Ferrari. “I don’t think we should have more than six sprint weekends per year. I think six is enough.” For the Monegasque, the format of three free practice sessions on Fridays is quite redundant. “I think Saturday could be modified and improved, but I really like Fridays. Three free practice sessions are really long and sometimes it can become a bit boring, always following the same program. So, I like the fact of having only one free practice and going straight into action with the qualifications.”<\/p>\n
For Lance Stroll, \u00ab It doesn’t bother me, \u00bb declared the driver. \u00ab I think it’s exciting. Every time you get in the car, there is something to fight for and more action for everyone watching from home.<\/p>\n
Finally, Valteri Bottas also spoke about the subject, stating that he found the format rather suitable. \u00ab I have never been a big fan of the three practice sessions, I prefer to have one and go straight to action.
