Bernie Ecclestone is a busy man. Since the start of the season and the era of V6 Turbo engines, the British businessman has faced numerous criticisms and concerns from Grand Prix promoters, as well as fans, dissatisfied with the sound of the new cars. The establishment of a working group this year aimed at finding a way to increase the sound of F1 cars is a source of hope, but the FOM president warns fans: This may take time, there is no easy solution.<\/p>\n
Speaking to Autosport<\/i>, Bernie Ecclestone says: \u00ab We are working on the subject and looking at what is possible. If we knew what to do, we would do it. It’s as simple as that. The decision does not rest with one person; we have formed this task group that can solve this issue. But for now, no one knows exactly what should be done. \u00bb<\/p>\n
The change in sound inevitably involves the three engine manufacturers: Ferrari, Renault, and Mercedes. While the first two are not opposed to modifications to their engines, it could have been different for Mercedes, which currently has the most powerful power unit. However, that is not the case since Mercedes has supported this movement. For Ecclestone: \u00ab It’s a good thing that those who could have been against it because they have the best power unit are with us; they are the first to say they will do whatever they can to improve the sound. \u00bb<\/p>\n
On the Mercedes side, it is confirmed that although there is no problem with this new sound, the fans must be listened to. For *Autosport*, Toto Wolff states: \u00ab The sound is obviously very different but that doesn’t mean it is better or worse. Everyone has a different opinion on the matter and we need to listen to all opinions. We will see what we can do and explore all avenues. We have asked our engineers to work on the subject, they need time to analyze the situation and find a solution. \u00bb<\/p>\n
The executive director of Mercedes points out that the reduction in sound is directly linked to the design of the new turbo engines: \u00ab The purpose of this technology is to use exhaust gases from the internal combustion engine to power the turbo. We are therefore more efficient (and less noisy) because we no longer blow out as much energy through the exhaust \u00bb.<\/p>\n
On the Renault side, R\u00e9mi Taffin has already explained that increasing the noise of F1 cars, under the current regulations, is impossible.<\/p>\n
Between technological and ecological advances and nostalgia for powerful sounds, the debate is raging.
