Involved in the accident following the first start, the Japanese driver swerved onto the grass to avoid hitting Kimi R\u00e4ikk\u00f6nen’s Ferrari. But his first thought was for the Finn’s health. He states: \u00ab The most important thing for me was to make sure Kimi was okay. It was a big crash, and while I was lucky to avoid it, I hope he is alright. The initial reports are that he’s not too bad but I really hope that’s the case. \u00bb<\/p>\n
He relates the rest of the race: \u00ab We started under the safety car and I was just behind my teammate when I saw he was retiring, so I pushed to catch up with the group just ahead. The car felt very different compared to the start – the aerodynamic balance had changed, and it was clear we had lost downforce, almost certainly because of the swerve I had made, but I kept pushing as hard as I could. [\u2026] Then I had a lonely race – the pack was way too far ahead of me, and I had just Chilton far behind me, so I focused on bringing the car to the finish. \u00bb<\/p>\n

After making his best start of the season, the Swede avoided Kimi R\u00e4ikk\u00f6nen’s accident and rejoined the race in 16th behind the safety car. He talks about his very brief appearance after the restart: \u00ab At turn 6, I hit something on the curb that destroyed my suspension and that was the end of the race.
