Fernando Alonso and Kimi Räikkönen failed to get through Q1 at Silverstone during qualifying, mainly because of the rain. Even though both drivers benefit from penalties to gain a few places, they expect a challenging race, though they will be aiming for points.

Pastor Maldonado was excluded from the qualifying session of the British Grand Prix because he was unable to bring his Lotus back to the pits and because it did not contain enough fuel.

The two Lotus drivers stopped in Q2 even though the E22 seemed capable of doing better. Grosjean suffered from the yellow flags that appeared following Gutiérrez's off-track excursion, as did Maldonado, who also experienced a fuel issue, which led the race stewards to exclude him from the qualifying session.
