The Austrian Grand Prix was a suspenseful affair right up to the very last lap: Lewis Hamilton got the better of Nico Rosberg on the final lap, before the two men collided again. The race was also marked by a tire explosion for Sebastian Vettel in the middle of the straight.

Jenson Button sprang a surprise by finishing fifth in qualifying. Penalties for Nico Rosberg and Sebastian Vettel allowed him to start from third place. Fernando Alonso was the victim of another McLaren error, and will only start 14th.

Nico Hülkenberg took full advantage of the changing conditions at the end of the session to set the third fastest time in qualifying. Nico Rosberg's penalty even propelled him to the front row, alongside Lewis Hamilton. Sergio Perez suffered a broken suspension in Q1 and will therefore only start 16th.

Pascal Wehrlein was one of the day's outstanding performers, finishing 12th in qualifying. It was the best qualifying in Manor's history.
