The Grove team didn't expect much from Qualifying. That said, it didn't take them long to get at least one car into Q3, with Valtteri Bottas in 11th place. He finished just ahead of team-mate Felipe Massa, in 12th place. Both were overtaken by the impetuous Sergio Pérez, who was subsequently penalized.

Force India's solid overall performance was dampened by the eight-place penalty imposed on Sergio Pérez, guilty of failing to slow down sufficiently under yellow flag conditions following Romain Grosjean's accident. The Mexican will therefore start the race eighteenth, ten places behind Nico Hülkenberg.

The battle for pole looks set to be tighter than ever in 2016. Even if Nico Rosberg set the fastest time, the margin with Max Verstappen, the lizard hunter, was (still!) miniscule. Daniel Ricciardo and the Ferraris are also on the right track. Uncomfortable in his braking phases, Hamilton failed to set any real benchmark lap.
