The Grove team didn't expect much from Qualifying. That said, it didn't take them long to get at least one car into Q3, with Valtteri Bottas in 11th place. He finished just ahead of team-mate Felipe Massa, in 12th place. Both were overtaken by the impetuous Sergio Pérez, who was subsequently penalized.

Force India's solid overall performance was dampened by the eight-place penalty imposed on Sergio Pérez, guilty of failing to slow down sufficiently under yellow flag conditions following Romain Grosjean's accident. The Mexican will therefore start the race eighteenth, ten places behind Nico Hülkenberg.

Romain Grosjean had a very complicated start to the weekend, with the Frenchman going off track for the second time in two days. He will therefore start 15th, just behind his team-mate Esteban Gutierrez.

Sebastian Vettel's ambitions collapsed along with one of his suspensions today in Singapore. However, the driver is not dissociating himself from his team. The Italian team was disappointing overall, with Kimi Räikkönen finishing a modest 5th.

The RB12 was the curiosity of this qualifying session: could it topple the Mercedes? The answer was affirmative: Daniel Ricciardo made it to the Q3 gong ahead of Lewis Hamilton... but behind poleman Nico Rosberg. Max Verstappen left the session disappointed, despite finishing fourth.

The bright night of Marina Bay was the setting for Nico Rosberg's convincing pole position. Mercedes dominated proceedings overall, but Red Bull could be satisfied with Daniel Ricciardo's second place, ahead of Lewis Hamilton! Sebastian Vettel was unable to defend his chances, due to a faulty anti-roll bar.

The battle for pole looks set to be tighter than ever in 2016. Even if Nico Rosberg set the fastest time, the margin with Max Verstappen, the lizard hunter, was (still!) miniscule. Daniel Ricciardo and the Ferraris are also on the right track. Uncomfortable in his braking phases, Hamilton failed to set any real benchmark lap.

Is the glass half-full or half-empty? After some promising results at Monza on an unfavourable circuit, the McLaren-Honda duo were certainly expecting a slightly more interesting Friday in Singapore, marked by a fairly average performance and a few reliability problems.
