Fernando Alonso had no problems during qualifying, but his car didn't allow him to do better than 13th. On the other hand, Stoffel Vandoorne once again experienced engine problems and had to make do with 18th place on the grid.

Nico Hülkenberg came very close to reaching Q3 in his first race with Renault, but had to settle for 12th place. Jolyon Palmer, meanwhile, suffered and finished last in the session.

Lance Stroll's learning curve remains complicated: after making contact with the wall in FP3, he was forced to change his gearbox and was only able to make one attempt in qualifying. He will therefore start last. Felipe Massa limited the damage, finishing 7th on the grid.

The Albert Park circuit is definitely a favourite spot for Romain Grosjean: the Frenchman finished a fine 6th, the best grid position in the American team's history. Kevin Magnussen, on the other hand, could do no better than 17th due to driving errors.

Lewis Hamilton confirmed Mercedes' good form with the first pole position of the season. Sebastian Vettel, however, managed to squeeze his Ferrari in between the two Silver Arrows, ahead of Valtteri Bottas and Kimi Räikkönen. Daniel Ricciardo, in front of his home crowd, crashed out and will only start 10th tomorrow.
