Mario Isola warns the teams
Pirelli's director, Mario Isola, warns teams about tire choices in Melbourne, as the lack of grip is likely to be felt at the start.
On the occasion of the Australian Grand Prix 2022, the Albert Park circuit in Melbourne has been completely renovated. While some corners have been greatly widened, the track has been completely resurfaced. Pirelli has unveiled the tires that the drivers and their teams will be able to choose this week. Mario Isola, director of Pirelli, warns against the rapid evolution of conditions during these few days.
Through a press release, the Italian revealed expecting very low grip initially. The drivers haven’t raced here in two years, and there are many questions surrounding this Australian Grand Prix, Isola confessed. Firstly, the circuit has been extensively modified to facilitate overtaking. There is also brand new asphalt that will be very smooth. There will certainly be very little grip at the beginning of the weekend.
Mario Isola anticipates a very rapid change in conditions in Melbourne. If it were to rain, the track would be particularly slippery. Given that the race takes place earlier in the year, the weather conditions are unpredictable during this season.
« Recently, we have to deal with a brand new generation of cars and tires that drivers are still discovering,” added Isola. » All these factors mean that teams and drivers will have a lot of work during the tests.
Furthermore, the drivers will have to deal with four DRS zones on the circuit.
