The FIA’s published rules of conduct for drivers

In a document sent to the Formula 3 drivers on the eve of the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix explaining what is allowed or not allowed to them, the governing body has shared the regulations imposed on Formula 1 drivers earlier in the year. These rules were communicated to them before the first Grand Prix of the season, namely the Bahrain Grand Prix, in response to their requests.

Overtaking on the inside of a curve

A car being overtaken must leave enough space for the overtaking car, but only under one condition. A significant part of the car behind must be alongside the car being overtaken. Furthermore, the overtaking maneuver must of course be carried out in the safest possible manner and allow the car to stay within the limits of the track.

Regarding this significant part, the commissioners take into account various factors. They will specifically check if the front tires of the overtaking car are next to the other car, at the latest at the apex of the turn.

The quarrels

The FIA stresses that the guidelines explained just above « apply in the same way for every corner ». They are also valid when overtaking on the outside of a corner. As for chicanes, the code of conduct states that the FIA imposes particularly strict rules regarding track limits. Furthermore, if a driver exceeds these limits and gains a position, they must immediately relinquish any advantage gained outside of these limits.
