Russell: Lewis Hamilton will come back stronger after Imola

Starting in eleventh position on the grid, British driver George Russell had an excellent race, managing to climb up to fourth place when the checkered flag fell. On the other hand, his teammate Lewis Hamilton faced more difficulties on the Italian track.

The seven-time world champion from Mercedes spent the majority of his Grand Prix behind Pierre Gasly’s AlphaTauri. While he gained a position with Esteban Ocon’s maneuver in the pitlane, he still remained outside the points this weekend, while the new driver from the German team finished just off the podium.

Despite everything, Russell views Lewis Hamilton’s result as a rough patch and expects him to come back stronger after Imola.

« I think it’s just the kind of thing that happens sometimes during a race weekend,” George Russell mentioned. « I had a very good start. I don’t know what happened to him at the start, but we’re facing the same difficulties and when we’re not in the right window, the car doesn’t seem like a real racing car to drive […]. I expect him to come back much stronger and the way he pushes and motivates the team is very inspiring. I don’t get used to this position because I know what he’s capable of,” he stated.

At the end of this Grand Prix, George Russell takes fourth place in the championship with 49 points, while Lewis Hamilton is currently seventh with 28 points.
