Toto Wolff: A lower floor would save precious time for Mercedes

The German team is experiencing a difficult start to the season. Since preseason testing, the W13 cars have been suffering from porpoising, and Mercedes has been unable to find a real solution. In order to reduce the bouncing on the track, the team has decided to increase the height of the floor. The only downside is that this elevation comes at the cost of aerodynamics, and the cars are much slower.

The team principal of Mercedes, Toto Wolff, explained the team’s objectives for the next two races. We truly believe that the scientific research we are currently implementing will indeed help us lower the car’s floor, Wolff declared.

« This is where we believe we have all the aerodynamic qualities, but we haven’t been able to reveal them because of the car’s drag. If we manage to overcome that, it means we can gain a lot of time per lap. Otherwise, we’ll have to find another idea,” he confided.

Following the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, Mercedes has 77 points on their constructor’s scoreboard, with 49 scored by George Russell and only 28 by his teammate Lewis Hamilton. Nevertheless, Russell expects a strong comeback from the seven-time world champion.
