Eduardo Freitas will be directing his first race in Barcelona

After Michael Masi was dismissed from his position as race director following the events in Abu Dhabi at the end of last season, the FIA appointed two replacements for the Australian: Niels Wittich and Eduardo Freitas.

The first named had officiated during the first five Grand Prix of the season and it was agreed that a rotation would be carried out every two races between the two men. However, Eduardo Freitas’ busy schedule, engaged as race director in WEC, made the scheduling impossible.

The Portuguese, race director in Endurance since 2002, will officially take up his duties during the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona according to Autosport. He was not present in Miami last weekend as he was officiating at the 6 Hours of Spa at the same time.

Eduardo Freitas will take over as the race director for the Monaco Grand Prix the following week, before once again giving up his position to Wittich for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Freitas will be busy with the 24 Hours of Le Mans during that same week. In Barcelona, Niels Wittich will assume the role of Freitas’ assistant, while Colin Haywood, former right-hand man of Michael Masi, had been filling in for Freitas whenever he was absent from the Formula 1 paddock.
