The Alpine puzzle
The team has three drivers for only two seats for next year. A solution is currently being sought to solve the problem.
Fernando Alonso, Esteban Ocon, and Oscar Piastri. Three names for only two seats. While the youngest of the three is chasing a Formula 1 seat, the future is currently somewhat blocked.
Esteban Ocon, who has extended his contract until 2024, is well settled within the French team. Furthermore, he is having a rather satisfactory start to the season with numerous finishes in the top 10 and 30 points scored in the championship.
On the other side of the garage, his teammate Fernando Alonso is still present even though he has faced more difficulties this season, largely due to bad luck. Nevertheless, the double world champion of 2005 and 2006 has expressed his intentions to stay with Alpine after 2022.
This choice could compel Oscar Piastri to look outside his own circle. On his side, Luca de Meo, Renault’s CEO, asserts that the group is seeking a solution for everyone.
(F) Fernando is very important to El Plan. He has a lot of experience. When it comes to improving the team, he’s like a parent. He knows what we need to do to win. He not only has the experience, but he also has a very high level of demand that helps the team to develop, he declared to our colleagues at Marca.
We associate Alonso’s experience with Ocon’s youth, and now Piastri is arriving. It’s a challenge to find a place for all three of them. The solution won’t be 100% pleasant for all three, but we believe that each of them deserves a chance. We need to protect the three drivers, especially the one who has the reputation of being a super talent, Piastri. Fernando is 41 years old and Piastri is 21. The time for change will come. Fernando is a legend, we cannot dismiss him as if he were just an Alpine employee, he also needs to want it.
