Spa ready to do anything to save its skin
While the Spa-Francorchamps circuit is not guaranteed to be on the 2024 calendar, the commercial director believes they are ready for an "American-style" show to ensure its continued connection to Formula 1.
He is inseparable from Formula 1. Present on the calendar since 1950, the circuit has had a few years without a race but it remains one of the essential places in the discipline.
Despite its historical significance and the fact that it is one of the favorite tracks among fans and drivers, its future is becoming increasingly uncertain. As its contract with Formula 1 is only valid until 2023, it could disappear from the calendar.
To try to keep him in the plans of the FIA and the leaders of the discipline, Stijn de Boever, commercial director of SPA Grand Prix, would be willing to put on American-style shows.
« It is true that there was a demand from Formula 1 to introduce a larger entertainment component. They said that the historic Grand Prix events were fantastic, but they needed more. We decided to listen to them and follow them in the new way of organizing F1 meetings, including this American-style show, with all the entertainment that it entails », he stated to our Italian colleagues at Autosprint.
Considered as one of the most technically challenging circuits, its absence from the calendar would certainly be seen as a shock for many people.
