Max Verstappen condemns Nelson Piquet’s remarks
The Dutchman reacted to Nelson Piquet's comments about his former rival Lewis Hamilton.
It’s a heated controversy that has struck the world of Formula 1. Earlier this week, derogatory and racist remarks made by Nelson Piquet towards Lewis Hamilton resurfaced.
This Thursday, during a press conference, Max Verstappen, the former rival of the British driver, was questioned about his controversial statements. The world champion could not avoid the long-awaited question, especially since he is in a relationship with the daughter of the triple world champion.
I think that the wording that was used was not correct, even though, obviously, there are different types of culture and things they used to say when they were little or younger. May it be a lesson for the future, not to use that word, because it is very offensive and, especially nowadays, it sparks even more discussion.
The Red Bull driver defends the Brazilian, regarding his statements, by affirming that he is not racist. The Dutchman denounces the lack of communication between the different parties.
When people are banned, it actually doesn’t help the situation because there is no communication. We need to communicate. Communication is really important because if we only ban, it doesn’t help what we are trying to enforce. We are trying to educate people, so it’s better to have a discussion.
« These things can be easily resolved. When we fight with someone and insult them, and then have a good discussion and apologize, it’s exactly the same. It’s not great for the person we upset, but things can easily be forgotten. As long as we learn from the mistake we made or the word we used, I don’t think we should be banned from the paddock, especially when we’re a triple world champion.
