Efficient. That’s how we can describe the strategy implemented by Ferrari on Saturday during the qualifying session of the French Grand Prix. In Q3, Carlos Sainz provided his teammate with a tow twice to give him an advantage on the straight and thus reduce the gap with Red Bull on the straight.

If the first attempt was successful, only 8 thousandths separated Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen. The second one proved to be more effective as three tenths were gained by the number 16 Ferrari.

“I think we have received a lot of criticism about the strategic plan and I think it’s a bit unfair,” indicated Carlos Sainz after the qualifications.

In each team this season, there will be mistakes with the tires, the tire choices, and everything. But I think that this year, the team has been very strong in terms of strategy, and I think we proved it today. Moreover, the relationship with Charles and the way the team operates, proves once again, I believe, that we work very well together.

The objective was to reach Q3 to give Charles twice the draft, as we did. That was the plan for the entire weekend. I know how to provide a good draft because I know what I need in a qualifying lap to gain two or three tenths. So, I knew what to do [to help Leclerc], and I think we succeeded well.

This Sunday, Carlos Sainz will start second-to-last due to penalties received following his engine part changes. He will share the last row with Kevin Magnussen.
