Fernando Alonso at Aston Martin in 2023
The Spaniard will leave Alpine at the end of the season and replace Sebastian Vettel. He has signed a multi-year contract.
A world champion replaces another. Just a few days after the thunderclap that hit the Formula 1 world, where Sebastian Vettel announced his retirement, his successor is already known. While Mick Schumacher was announced as the German’s successor, it is ultimately another driver who will take his place.
Indeed, Fernando Alonso will join the British team as of next year. The two-time world champion has committed to several seasons with Lawrence Stroll’s team.
“This Aston Martin team clearly applies energy and commitment to win, and therefore it is one of the most exciting teams in Formula 1 today,” the Spaniard states.
I have known Lawrence and Lance for many years and it is evident that they have the ambition and passion to succeed in Formula 1. I have seen the team consistently attract amazing people with winning pedigrees, and I have become aware of the tremendous commitment to the new facilities and resources in Silverstone.
During his time at Alpine, Fernando Alonso made it to the podium once in Qatar last year. He also helped Esteban Ocon secure his first Formula 1 victory in Hungary, exactly one year ago today.
