The reaction of Alpine following the announcement of Alonso’s departure

The day after the Hungarian Grand Prix, Alpine sits in fourth place in the constructor’s standings with a four-point advantage over McLaren. The announcement of Fernando Alonso’s departure to Aston Martin in 2023 surprised many. The French team has reacted to the departure of the Spanish driver.

Returning to Formula 1 in 2021 as an Alpine driver, the Spaniard made his comeback in the biggest motor racing championship with the French team where he won two world championship titles.

After a promising comeback season where Alpine finished fifth in the constructors’ championship, Fernando Alonso concluded the 2020-2021 campaign in tenth place in the drivers’ standings, with 81 points, 7 points ahead of his teammate Esteban Ocon. A magnificent podium finish at the Qatar Grand Prix at the end of last season hinted at good things to come for the future of the French team.

Alonso even declared after the Abu Dhabi race: “This is just the beginning, the best is yet to come, I promise you. It was only the warm-up before the great battle. 2021 was a warm-up for us.”

Oscar Piastri, reserve driver and test driver for Alpine, is expected to replace Fernando Alonso, but nothing is certain in Formula 1. The announcement of the Spanish driver is proof of that.
