Stefano Domenicali would like for the free practice sessions to award points
The director of Formula 1 is considering new weekend formats. This could involve distributing points during practice sessions or even single-lap qualifying.
On the track, no one can stop Max Verstappen. In the paddock, no one can stop Stefano Domenicali’s ideas. The Italian, who is leading Formula 1, is coming up with ideas just as the Red Bull driver is racking up victories this season.
The big boss has already declared to the press this year that he wishes for the F1 calendar to reach 30 races, that some Grand Prix be organized in unusual locations, and many other things.
However, the former leader of the Scuderia is also considering reorganizing race weekends.
In a normal weekend, on Friday we have free practice sessions 1 and 2. Each session should either offer points, or propose individual qualifying laps, or propose qualifying for a different and shorter race on Saturday, maybe with the mechanism of reverse grid. Instead of having a third free practice session.
Is the FIA a brake?
All these possible options could be implemented. The Italian argues that sprint races were only the first area for improvement. However, the FIA could hinder these ideas due to the complicated relationship with the FOM.
The relations between F1 and the FIA are the backbone of success. We have an obligation to maximize the commercial aspect, while they are responsible for making the sport-related choices in terms of regulations, which now also include financial controls. The new president took office in January, and he is currently assembling his team.
We talk to each other almost every day, the relationship must continue to move forward while respecting each other’s responsibilities. The most important thing is to stay united and have a common vision of F1.
