With the rise in energy prices, everyone is looking at their bills and their wallet. Whether it’s individuals or even Formula 1 teams. This energy crisis is particularly affecting Great Britain, where most of the teams are based.

Throughout the year, the bills have only continued to increase despite provisional measures taken by the British leaders. For example, at Mercedes, everything has been multiplied by three.

We have tripled our energy costs in Brackley. Speaking in millions: 2 to 6 million pounds [equivalent to 2.2 to 6.8 million euros at the current exchange rate] just for energy costs. Charters and air freight have also increased significantly, asserts Toto Wolff, the team boss.

In order to combat these increases, the Austrian has come up with a solution. We are going to create a huge solar field to provide for ourselves – and others – with energy. Even though today we are supplied with 100% green energy, in order to be carbon neutral, we simply have to do what we can.

This ambitious project should only come to fruition in 2024. It should be financed in the long term and be amortized over 20 years.
