The points scored in Japan wouldn’t have allowed Latifi to keep his position
The Canadian scored their first points of the season in Japan. For them, this result would not have had any significance in saving their place.
It’s never too late. Before the Japanese Grand Prix, only one driver had a zero on his scoreboard: Nicholas Latifi. But, in the pouring rain at Suzuka, the Williams driver finished in a respectable 9th place. He scored two points there, which is the same as Nyck de Vries during his Monza adventure.
A few days before the Japanese feat, Williams announced that they were parting ways with Nicholas Latifi at the end of the season, after three years of working together. If this decision hadn’t been made, the Canadian believes that his team would not have changed their minds and that he would have still been dismissed.
« I finish the race in the points, so it’s positive, a morale booster. But if a decision hadn’t already been made about my future, I don’t think a race like this would have changed much, because it’s mostly about consistency throughout the year, not just one good result, thinks Nicholas Latifi.
He still has four races left to enjoy himself and prove his talent. The hopes of staying in the discipline are not null as there is still a seat available at Haas, alongside Kevin Magnussen.
