Max Verstappen could stop at the end of his contract
The brand-new double world champion doesn't see himself running until he's 35. He could retire in 2028.
He started Formula 1 very early and could also retire very early. Arriving in the discipline when he was not yet 18 years old, Max Verstappen quickly climbed the ranks.
The Dutchman found himself in a leading team after a short stint at Toro Rosso. There, he won for the first time in Spain before achieving further successes. He reached the pinnacle of his talent last year with a world champion title. Last week in Japan, he repeated the feat.
Continuously breaking records, Max Verstappen may not hold the longevity record. In fact, just a few days after his second victory, he admitted that he couldn’t see himself in the sport indefinitely.
« It’s not a question of number of championships or anything like that. It’s also a quality of life. We’re heading towards more races in F1. I have a contract until 2028, I’ll be 31 years old, so if we go in that direction, with a few more races, do I really want to continue until I’m 35? Probably not », ponders the Red Bull driver.
« There are so many other fun things that I want to do besides Formula 1, and I don’t want to travel almost all year away from my family, my friends. So I see myself doing this for a few more years, and of course definitely until the end of the contract. »
One of his bosses, Helmut Marko, who praised the qualities of Max Verstappen, also thought that the Dutchman would not accumulate longevity records.
