Mick Schumacher in the running for a reserve position with Mercedes or Ferrari
Mick Schumacher is one of the 4 drivers who will not be on the grid in 2023. However, the young German driver is of interest to teams in the Formula 1 paddock. Mercedes and Ferrari have announced that they will be talking to the young German driver to try and find him a seat in their teams.
Mick Schumacher is leaving Formula 1 after only 2 seasons in the discipline. The numerous crashes and the lack of consistency from the German driver are the main reasons for his dismissal from the Haas team. However, some teams including Mercedes and Ferrari have shown interest in Michael Schumacher’s son. He could potentially find refuge in a Formula 1 team as a reserve driver.
Ferrari, the parent company is keeping an eye on its former resident.
Ferrari announced earlier this year that Mick Schumacher would no longer be part of its young driver academy. However, the Scuderia is not indifferent to the fact that their former protégé finds himself without a race seat for 2023. The Italian team has even observed progress from the German driver this season.
Mattia Binotto, the boss of Ferrari, declared in a press conference: “Mick has developed well, once again this season.”
We are going to sit down with Mick to decide what is best for him. We don’t have a seat for him and for him, when you are so young, it’s good to have a seat. We are going to sit down and talk with him.
Mercedes, the ideal solution.
Toto Wolff also commented on the case of Mick Schumacher in Abu Dhabi. The head of the Mercedes team would be interested in seeing the young German driver develop in one of the silver arrows in the future.
« Mick is forever in our hearts because of Michael. He is a young man with a lot of talent, who has had a lot of success in the junior categories. We think that we could take good care of him, but we haven’t signed a contract yet. I say this openly because I think he would be a good fit. If he wants to, there is the possibility of joining our team. »
