Pierre Gasly finishes point-less with AlphaTauri in final race

Pierre Gasly’s final year after 5 years of collaboration with AlphaTauri has been difficult. The French driver finishes 14th in the championship with only 23 points. He has 3 retirements during a season in which he only scored points in 6 Grand Prix races. No podiums, no pole positions, no fastest laps for the Normandy-born driver this season… It has been a disappointing season compared to 2021, where he scored 110 points and finished in 9th position in the championship. He notably stepped on the podium in Azerbaijan, finishing 3rd in the Grand Prix behind Sergio Perez and Sebastian Vettel.

A complicated weekend

Lacking rhythm during the qualifying session, Pierre Gasly and his teammates struggled to adjust the car. The Normandy driver missed out on Q2 by a few hundredths, caught in traffic, and started the Sunday Grand Prix in 17th position. On the starting grid, he was the only one to choose soft tires. However, Gasly couldn’t exploit his tires and remained stuck between 14th and 20th place. After 58 laps, reflecting his season, Pierre Gasly crossed the finish line in 14th position behind Kevin Magnussen, Sebastian Vettel, and Valtteri Bottas.

Pierre Gasly expressed his frustration and disappointment from this weekend in Abu Dhabi.

The entire weekend was tough, but we tried everything until the end. It’s hard for me to distinguish because I am competitive, and it wasn’t a pleasant race, I would have preferred it to be another way. (…) I need some time because we just finished the race and I’m a bit annoyed.

The Normand driver still congratulated and thanked his team for this final Grand Prix by their side.

I will remember very beautiful things from the past 5 years with the team: my first Grand Prix, first victory, first podium. I was with them the first year and I came back, they welcomed me in the best way, they always gave me everything and I am so grateful for that. (…) We will be able to celebrate tonight and it’s our last moments together, and it’s important to enjoy it after all the Grand Prix we have done together and what everyone has given me in this team, and I will never forget it.

This Tuesday, November 22nd, Pierre Gasly will carry out the traditional post-season test day in Abu Dhabi in his new Alpine car! It’s an opportunity to see the French driver for the first time behind the wheel of the Alpine A522 and in the colors of the French team.
