Formula 1 sporting director retires. Ross Brawn will no longer be part of motor sport's premier discipline in 2023. It's the departure of a legend who has criss-crossed the world's racetracks for over 40 years.
Many people have made their mark in the history of Formula 1, including drivers, engineers, strategists, and so on. Ross Brawn is one of them. He entered the discipline in 1978 and won numerous world championships with Michael Schumacher, Benetton, and Ferrari. He forever left his mark on the history of this sport with his bold strategies and the unlikely success of his team, Brawn GP, in 2009.
A well-considered departure
Since 2017, he has been serving as the sporting director of Formula 1. An exciting and completely different experience from his previous role as an engineer, which he held for nearly 30 years. He has notably worked on the new generation of cars introduced this season as well as on sprint races.
I no longer wanted to be part of a stable, I felt that I had had enough! And it was the only thing that could attract me. I was very fortunate that Liberty gave me this opportunity, and it was a passionate job.
His retirement was planned, and it comes ahead of the new regulations that will be implemented in 2026 so that the next officials can fully work on this subject. Today, at the age of 68, Ross Brawn is therefore leaving Formula 1, having left an indelible mark on its history.
« It’s the right time for me to retire. We have done the bulk of the work and we are now in a consolidation period. A new car is coming in 2026, but that’s four years from now, which is quite far for me, so it’s better for the next group of people to take over.

« I have loved almost every minute of my 46-year career, and I have been fortunate to work with great teams, great drivers, and great people. I wouldn’t change anything about it.
Ross Brawn notably won a constructor title with his own team in 2009, BrawnGP. He had bought the team from Honda for a symbolic 1 euro and then worked at Mercedes for several seasons.
