At 41 years old, Alonso secures a new podium, but he is far from being the oldest to have done it
Fernando Alonso continues to write the history books. At 41 years old, the Spaniard has become the 19th oldest driver to step on the podium. If he wants to reach the top of the rankings, he will have to remain in F1 for many more years.
Some people do not feel the effects of age. Fernando Alonso is one of them. During the Bahrain Grand Prix, the Spaniard delivered a spectacular race, and to top it off, he executed an outstanding overtaking maneuver on Lewis Hamilton towards the end of the race. This move allowed him to regain fourth place.
A few laps later, he went after Carlos Sainz for the gain of the third position. The double world champion managed to hold his position until the end of the race. He’s back on the podium for the first time since the Qatar Grand Prix in 2021.
This performance allows Fernando Alonso to gain a few positions in the ranking of the oldest drivers to step on the podium. He is now in 19th place. If the reliability and level of his Aston Martin allow him to do so until the end of his contract, he will be able to get closer to the top.
But in order to become the oldest driver to finish on the podium, the Spaniard will have to postpone his retirement. Not at 64 years old, but at least until 53 years old, a record set by Luigi Fagioli at the 1951 French Grand Prix.
In this ranking, we find big names such as Juan Manuel Fangio, Jack Brabham, and Jacques Laffite.
