Mercedes could copy Red Bull in order to have a high-performance car
Since the new regulations, Mercedes could soon abandon its zero sidepod concept. Toto Wolff indicated that his team will not hesitate to copy their rivals in order to progress.
After a long period of domination, Mercedes finds itself in the middle of the pack in the discipline. Even though George Russell and Lewis Hamilton can occasionally fight for the podium, they are not capable of doing so throughout the entire season.
The team that finished third in the 2022 championship should change the philosophy of their race car, which does not have a sidepod. Soon, they should push forward. Initial aerodynamic tests have been conducted and appear promising.
While a large part of the grid did not hesitate to copy Red Bull and improve their performance, Mercedes could join this list. I think that at this stage, there is no dogmatism regarding the appearance of the car. It simply needs to be the fastest racing car possible, assures Toto Wolff.
And if this car looks like a Red Bull or a SpaceX rocket, I don’t care, it just has to be fast. And if it’s a Red Bull, we’ll put a little bull somewhere with a sticker, and I won’t be ashamed if it’s fast.
For the moment, the German team is currently in second place in the constructors’ championship, benefiting from reliability issues from Ferrari and Aston Martin.
