If Lewis Hamilton leaves, Mercedes has no backup plan
For the past 10 years within the German team, Lewis Hamilton is coming to the end of his contract. Currently, it is not being renewed. And if he were to leave the team, Mercedes doesn't know who would replace him.
Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes seem to be associated. For the past 10 years, they have maintained a strong relationship. However, as this season comes to an end, the British driver’s contract is expiring. If he wishes to continue for many more years in the sport, it is still uncertain where his future will be written.
However, the mixed results of his team could be one of the factors pushing Lewis Hamilton towards other teams. Being hungry for victories, he hasn’t celebrated a win since the end of the 2021 season.
« It may seem naive, but I am really struggling to think of a plan B if my plan A remains my favorite. I don’t want to engage in discussions with other drivers because I am satisfied with those who are in the team – that’s for sure. Currently, there is no plan B. [The only plan] is Lewis », stated Toto Wolff, the team boss at Motorsport.com.
Gentle separation
If the separation were to happen, the Austrian believes that it would be smoother than with Nico Rosberg. In 2016, the German, a few days after winning his world title, announced his retirement to everyone’s surprise.
I think he would tell us early enough. I don’t think Lewis would say “I can’t take it anymore, I’m leaving tomorrow”. He would still feel a sense of responsibility towards the team. He wouldn’t abandon it. Drivers always make such decisions, but he wouldn’t let us down. Besides, I think if we believe we are an attractive team for others, we will find solutions.
