Sergio Pérez elected driver of the day in Azerbaijan
The Red Bull driver led a significant portion of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, greatly assisted by the safety car.
Opportunist with a bit of luck. Sergio Pérez, starting second on the grid, couldn’t sustain the fight against his teammate in the early moments of the race. So in third place, he accelerated and took advantage of his top speed to overtake Charles Leclerc.
Too far from Max Verstappen, the Mexican driver was able to take advantage of a late intervention from the safety car to regain the lead of the race. The number 11 driver then managed to pull away at the restart and engaged in a distant battle with the double reigning world champion, maintaining a slight gap.
Gap that he managed to maintain until the end of the race. However, he lost the point for the fastest lap to George Russell a few laps before the finish.
