Alonso on Ocon: “He always targeted me first”
Fernando Alonso is perfectly at home at Aston Martin. Not only does he have a better car, but the working environment is much better, according to the Spaniard. Additionally, he gets along better with his new teammate Lance Stroll.
During the Miami Grand Prix weekend, Alonso once again took a jab at his former teammate Esteban Ocon. Alonso did not leave Alpine in the best possible way, even though he celebrated his greatest successes in Formula 1 with the team (when it was still called Renault).
During the sprint race in Brazil in 2022, a double incident between Alonso and Ocon sparked real tensions within the French team. He has had issues in the past with Pérez and Verstappen. “One more race and it’s not my problem next year,” Alonso stated in Brazil on Canal+ microphone.
During Friday’s testing sessions, the double world champion once again mocked his former employer by stating that the free practice sessions are Alpine’s territory.
For now, the collaboration with Stroll is going much better than with Ocon according to Alonso. He is a driver that I consider as a teammate, as we saw in Baku, we talked about saving the tires, we didn’t know exactly how long the tires would last in a sprint format… we were saving the tires and he said, “I won’t attack Fernando.” According to the 41-year-old veteran, this is how teammates try to help each other.
With Ocon, things have been very different in 2021 and 2022. Last year, it was maybe the opposite. My teammate considered me as the primary target. Obviously, it was not beneficial for the team. So, I think Lance also plays an important role in this relationship, Alonso said.
