Pierre Gasly wants to continue the momentum from Miami
Alpine arrives in Monaco with hope. After a bad start to the season, the team has somewhat recovered in Miami with a more convincing pace and a double points finish. Pierre Gasly wants to continue on this momentum.
Three weeks after the last race in Miami, Formula 1 will resume with the legendary Monaco Grand Prix. The teams were supposed to follow up with the Monaco race after the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, but the latter was understandably canceled due to the floods that hit the region.
So it was a long break that allowed the teams and drivers to arrive in the principality. Alpine also took advantage of this time spent after a rather successful Grand Prix in Miami. The French team is going through tough times at the beginning of the season, but in the United States, the team seemed to be getting back on track after matching their best result of the season (Gasly eighth and Ocon ninth).
Pierre Gasly wants to take advantage of the good result in Miami to relaunch Alpine’s season, which had a rough start and only scored fourteen points in five races. Lacking pace, the French cars quickly found themselves struggling during race weekends, where they were swiftly beaten by their rivals.
“It is important for us to build on Miami. We showed a slight improvement in pace in the last race by scoring points with both cars. Naturally, we want to do better than what we have offered in the early part of the season. I hope that we can do it starting from this weekend,” said Pierre Gasly on the sidelines of the Monaco Grand Prix.
The team has been very inconsistent in the first races of the season. The races in Australia or Azerbaijan were a disaster for the French team, where no car scored any points. Alpine seems to be lacking consistency, alternating between a convincing pace during the Grand Prix races but failing to capitalize on that speed, and a car that is struggling compared to its competitors.
First of all, we need to find consistency. I don’t think we are too far behind Ferrari or Mercedes. We have potential. We need to unlock a bit more from the current package. Weekend after weekend, we have upgrades coming, so hopefully, that can help us get closer,” added the French driver.
On the eve of the Miami race, Laurent Rossi, the CEO of Alpine, had taken a strong stance by using harsh words regarding the French team’s disappointing start to the season. But Pierre Gasly understands the firmness of these words.
“We all share the same ambitions within the team. We all want to see the team perform, on top, and fight for better positions than what we are currently achieving. I wouldn’t say it’s criticism, but rather a desire to do better,” said Pierre Gasly.
