Young pilots, some are already equipped with the helmets of the elites, like in Formula 1

In Formula 1, helmets evolve over the years. The risk of an accident is always present, and therefore the standards are strengthened over time. Helmets are becoming increasingly resistant. But nowadays, performance is also introduced in the manufacturing of these safety components.

An importance from a very young age

From a very young age and in lower categories, helmets are the focus of attention. Upon entering the competition, which is a minimum of six years old, drivers must be equipped with helmets that meet international standards. To achieve this, the largest manufacturers of these pieces accompany the drivers from a very young age.

All manufacturers have the same standard [to adhere to, editor’s note]. In karting, there is a new homologation called KC7. We all must have this standard according to CIK, it’s the requirement we need to be able to race in karting. This applies to all young racers, explains Michael Aumento, manager of Bell.

Helmets can be a major concern for many pilots. The budget for this piece can be high, but it is necessary in order to have good quality and meet the required standards.

« In karting, some start as early as six years old. At this point, it depends on your budget. It can range from a regular helmet at 400 euros to having the same one in carbon fiber at 1000 euros. », adds the Bell manager.

Carbon, the centerpiece

To have the most efficient helmet on this scale, the highest quality material is carbon. It combines strength with being the lightest. Having a helmet made from this material therefore provides a significant advantage, but also comes with a higher price. Other materials are possible, but they are also heavier.

Once you start the competition, whether it’s made of fiberglass, carbon, or kevlar, they must comply with the CIK championship standard. But when you buy a helmet for 1000 euros, it will undoubtedly be safer than a 400 euro helmet. The 1000 euro helmet will be 10 times safer than the one costing 400 euros, as it will be entirely made of carbon. Also, carbon helmets are lighter. It may not seem like much: 80-100 grams less, but for a child, it makes all the difference, explains Michael Aumento.

Get the drivers in the right mindset as soon as possible

Michael Aumento also takes care of recruiting future single-seater drivers and stars from a young age. The goal is to ensure that he is represented by Bell and that Bell gains visibility. Providing high-end equipment from the start is important, for both the brand image and the driver himself. The conditions will be optimal from the beginning, allowing the young drivers to focus solely on their driving and nothing else.

When you hire a pilot, it is important to go for the high-end right away. He will show that Bell has a good and secure product. It’s very important for a driver that you take on as a sponsor, declares Michael Aumento.
