Pierre Gasly: a very disappointing Top 10
Pierre Gasly could have started in 4th place in Barcelona and achieved a great performance! Unfortunately, everything went wrong this weekend and finishing in 10th place is far from being a consolation.
After achieving his best qualifying result with Alpine, just like his teammate last week, Pierre Gasly was supposed to start from the second row for the Spanish Grand Prix. However, he dropped from 4th to 10th on the starting grid after being given two 3-place penalties.
At the start, the Norman driver gets squeezed by Sergio Pérez, manages to avoid the collision, and tumbles down to 14th position. The Alpine driver made 3 pit stops during the race, but the strategy wasn’t efficient enough to climb back beyond 10th place.
“I tried to take the inside line at the first turn, but in the second turn, I ended up on the outside and in the end, we were three abreast. Perez had a car on the inside and ended up in the middle, so I knew I would get pushed if I turned left. I ended up putting my wheel in the gravel and lost four places as a result. It hurts: we qualified 4th but with penalties, we start 10th and in the end, we find ourselves 14th after 2 turns,” he explains.
Two penalties that hurt in the battle with Aston Martin
This weekend, Aston Martin experienced its worst weekend since the dawn of the 2023 season. The Silverstone team only scored 14 points with both drivers finishing in the Top 10. However, their pace was not at the level of Mercedes, let alone Red Bull’s. According to Pierre Gasly, Alpine was in the race to compete with Aston Martin.
Being 14th is clearly far from the best position to start from. From here, we find ourselves 10-15 seconds behind the leaders. We did what we could to climb back. In the end, we come out with 1 point, but it’s frustrating because we were supposed to be battling with the Aston Martin cars. There’s a sense of unfinished business with this race.
