How many penalty points does each Formula 1 driver have on their Super License?
As a third of the 2023 calendar has been reached, penalty points on drivers' Super Licenses continue to accumulate for some of them. Here is the breakdown of the number of penalties for each driver.
Yuki Tsunoda has once again been penalized for forcing Alfa Romeo driver Guanyu Zhou off the track at turn 1. For this illegal maneuver, the AlphaTauri driver has received a penalty point on his Super License. This brings his total to 5 out of 12.
The Super Licence is the official document issued by the International Automobile Federation (FIA) to participate in the Formula 1 World Championship. It allows its holder to prove that they have the required qualifications to drive a single-seater in the premier category of motor racing. Created in 1984, the Super Licence aimed to prevent drivers without the necessary abilities from racing in F1. It underwent a revamp in 2016 to counteract the trend of paying drivers and the rejuvenation of the grid.
Currently, Pierre Gasly is the driver with the highest number of penalty points. The Frenchman has 8 out of 12. In contrast, five drivers have a clean slate: Lewis Hamilton, Valtteri Bottas, Oscar Piastri, Nyck de Vries, and Logan Sargeant.
Let us recall that drivers keep their penalty points for one calendar year. If a driver reaches the maximum number of penalty points (12 points) within a calendar year, they are automatically suspended for one Grand Prix.
