The barrier at turn 1 in Montreal has disappeared
The pilots, who strongly criticized it, have won their case. The FIA has announced that this barrier has been removed for the race.
No need to look for her. She vanished. And no need to bring her back, the drivers don’t want her. For once, there’s a disappearance that brings a smile. During the first day of the Canadian Grand Prix, the 20 drivers noticed a change at turn 1.
A wall was added, preventing the drivers from reclaiming the track at turn 2 if they had made a mistake a little earlier. This addition was not appreciated by many drivers who made it clear. After two days of battle, it was eventually removed.
The initial change was made to avoid the possibility of a car exiting turn 1 and crossing the exit of turn 2 at high speed, potentially colliding with another car. After discussions with the drivers, we are making this change (removing the barrier) to allow them to rejoin the track more easily, and we will further refine this solution for future Grand Prix events, explained an official from the FIA to our colleagues at Motorsport.
Many drivers considered it dangerous, especially in the event of an accident or going off track. A half-stomach was mandatory to get back on track, or alternatively, cut through the grass. Not ideal, the combination of dirt and rain on the asphalt, right?
