ePrix Berlin – Race 2: Oliver Rowland takes the title with two races to go

While there are still two races to be contested in two weeks in London, the drivers’ championship has already delivered its verdict. After retiring the day before, Oliver Rowland this time managed to finish the race and secure the points he needed in the championship to become the second Briton to win the Formula E championship.

Started 8th after receiving a penalty following his collision with Stoffel Vandoorne the day before, Rowland delivered a cautious race, striving to take the least possible risks while keeping an eye on Pascal Wehrlein’s performance. The German pole-sitter was Rowland’s biggest threat before the start of this weekend’s second race.

Except that the Porsche driver got tangled with the asphalt. By delaying the activations of his Attack Mode as much as possible, Wehrlein failed to climb back through the pack and crossed the line in 15th position. The reigning champion could thus say goodbye to his crown. Jean-Eric Vergne will therefore remain, for at least another season, the only double champion of FE.

The French driver, moreover, delivered a strong performance on the tracks of Tempelhof airport. By placing his DS E-TENSE FE25 on the third step of the podium, he helped his team maintain third place in the team championship, just six points ahead of Jaguar.

The English team is the big winner of this Berlin weekend. With Mitch Evans’ victory the day before, Nick Cassidy also claimed his second victory of the season after the one achieved in Shanghai at the beginning of June. With this result, the New Zealander moves up in the championship and can even hope to finish as Rowland’s runner-up.

With this title, the first for a Nissan driver since the championship’s inception in 2014, Rowland becomes the tenth Formula E champion in history over eleven seasons and thus the second British driver crowned after Jake Dennis two years ago.

This season 11 will conclude on July 26 and 27 with the final two races taking place in London, on the ExCeL exhibition center circuit.
