ePrix Berlin – Race 1: Mitch Evans takes the honors, championship back on track

While the first race held in the German capital aimed to crown the Formula E world champion for the first time, Oliver Rowland wasted a match point this Saturday. About ten laps before the end of the race, the Nissan driver collided with Stoffel Vandoorne’s Maserati, causing his retirement. Before that, the Briton was not in the pace of the leaders to contend for the victory anyway.

Despite starting 3rd, Rowland delivered a cautious race, seemingly not wanting to take risks to secure championship points. He still leads the championship after this 13th round of the season, but with just over fifty points ahead of his closest pursuer, Pascal Wehrlein. The reigning champion, in front of his home crowd, finished just a few tenths behind the day’s winner. With this result, he can still hope to retain his title with three races remaining in this season 11.

The man of the day is therefore named Mitch Evans. Winner of the first race of the season last December in Brazil, the Jaguar driver hadn’t scored a single point since. Having already secured pole position earlier in the day, the New Zealander delivered a masterful performance on a soaked track. Only relinquishing the lead when entering the pits for his Pit Boost and to activate an Attack Mode, Evans left his opponents with mere crumbs.

He enables his team to secure a second victory in three races after his teammate Nick Cassidy’s win in Shanghai a month ago, and whose Jaguar crossed the line in 5th position this Saturday.

Third, Edoardo Mortara takes advantage of the penalty imposed on Antonio Felix da Costa to step onto the podium ahead of the always impressive Taylor Barnard. Disappointment, however, for DS Penske with Maximilian Günther finishing in 6th place and a retirement due to a mechanical issue for Jean-Eric Vergne. The two black and gold single-seaters were performing well this Saturday and will be ones to watch on Sunday.

The second race of the weekend will take place on Sunday at 4 PM.
