Some positivity but disappointment for Pierre Gasly at the Red Bull Ring
9th at the finish, then 10th after a flurry of penalties, Pierre Gasly reflects on a challenging weekend but with some positives nonetheless.
Pierre Gasly was on track to score points and managed to stay there, despite penalties for exceeding track limits. A meager result for the Frenchman and Alpine, but still a single point. And when combined with the two points scored by Ocon in the sprint race, the team accumulates three points for the weekend. A small reward, but given the performance of the car this weekend, these few points are welcome.
« Yes, there are some positive aspects. However, I think we have a lot of work to do. We maximized the points we could score today,” stated the Frenchman on Laurent Dupin’s microphone on Canal+. Gasly has been trailing behind the Aston Martins for a long time, but was never able to catch up with them, and that might be the biggest disappointment for the Frenchman in this race. The performance was not exceptional, which prevented Alpine from achieving a better result. « “We still lack a few tenths to compete with the Aston Martins ahead of us,” explained Gasly.
Gasly fighting but hindered by track limits
In the top 10, the battle was tough and Gasly was part of it. He tried to hang on to Fernando Alonso but it was impossible: the pace of the Aston Martin was slightly higher than that of his Alpine.
(D) Everything is given inside the car and it’s a matter of a few millimeters. At that moment, I was behind Alonso, I could see that he was pulling away by 2-3 tenths per lap, and I was trying everything to stay with him. Unfortunately, it was a little bit too much. Afterwards, we went until the end, I don’t think it would have changed the result and we had to try,” said Gasly.
With an additional penalty after the race for exceeding track limits, Pierre Gasly finishes 10th and brings back one point.
Gasly wants more
Pierre Gasly is starting to get accustomed to his new team and is feeling more and more comfortable behind the wheel. Now, the performance of the Alpine car needs to be on point in order to score big points.
« We want to go for more, we want to fight for better positions and for that, we will need to find performance. That’s what should happen with the developments in the upcoming races,” he said.
With McLaren’s brilliant Grand Prix thanks to Norris, Alpine must be capable of bringing performance to their own Alpine in order to avoid being caught up by the Woking team.
