Can Logan Sargeant expect a second year at Williams?

Logan Sargeant had a promising start to his rookie season by showing competitiveness in the early races. But quickly, Alex Albon took the lead thanks to his Formula 1 experience. And promptly, he scored significant points for Williams. However, Logan Sargeant has the full support of his team and is taking advantage of his teammate to improve. The American is on the right track.

A functioning Williams

The main advantage of the Williams this year is simply that it works. The British team from Grove is 7th in the constructor’s championship, with 11 points. Alex Albon proved it in Canada with a 7th place and in Silverstone with an 8th place. This car has rhythm and especially top speed. In any case, enough to regularly infiltrate the last positions of the top 10, ahead of AlphaTauri, Alfa Romeo or Haas for example.

Furthermore, the trajectory taken by Williams seems to be the right one. With James Vowles at the helm since this winter, everything seems to be going well. The British engineer, now the team principal, had declared during the Monaco Grand Prix that he was reorganizing the team to move it forward. This seems to be increasingly confirmed, with Williams’ very good performances in the latest Grand Prix.

For Logan Sargeant, it’s definitely an opportunity! Granted, the Williams car is not a monster of competitiveness but, it can allow him to score points like his Thai teammate.

A clear progression

The American rookie started his Formula 1 season with a 12th place finish in his very first Grand Prix in Bahrain. But after that, it became quite complicated. Nevertheless, he didn’t give up and with the support of his team, he is starting to show serious progress. In Austria, he finished 13th and at Silverstone, he finished 11th, just outside of the points, behind Carlos Sainz. Granted, he didn’t score any points yet, but he is on the right track.

« I was at the Grove factory on Monday, and it was great to see how everyone was super excited. They were thrilled that Alex scored points, and I had a smooth drive, said Logan Sargeant in the week following the Silverstone weekend. Good vibes are flowing at Williams and this could be the best news… It might push the American to score his first points.

A contract to give him a second year of apprenticeship

But the question remains as to whether Logan Sargeant will have the chance to have a second year at Williams. According to Williams’ sporting director, Sven Smeets, this year is a learning year for the young driver. In principle, he should have his chance next year.

Moreover, the driver himself feels more comfortable in the Williams and thinks that he should soon have his chance to unlock his tally. « I am starting to drive the car the way it should be driven », the American assured.

James Vowles, the team boss, also responded to Sargeant’s question, and in a positive manner. “« I would say that in the last two races, we are starting to see the Logan that I know – we are starting to see a driver really comfortable with a car,” explained the British engineer, who previously worked at Mercedes.

A contract for next year would therefore be well underway and would give Logan Sargeant all the keys to progress and succeed in Formula 1. Let’s not forget that Sargeant, thanks to his nationality, opens up the American market to Williams, which is a welcome opportunity for a modest team.
