Sao Paulo Grand Prix: Max Verstappen wins one of the craziest races of the season, Alpine pulls off a heist
Max Verstappen, starting from 17th place, won the race at Interlagos. The Dutchman managed to get rid of his opponents one by one. Without being disrupted by the rain. Thanks to a perfect strategy and an ideal management of the conditions, the Alpine drivers made it to the podium.
You should not have turned on the television late. Even though the start was delayed, Lance Stroll’s pirouette and embarrassment were noteworthy. During the warm-up lap, the Canadian lost his Aston Martin and put it into the wall at turn 4. While the impact was not violent, he still had to retire. While trying to get going again, he got his car stuck in the gravel, offering one of the funniest scenes of the season.
After several rounds of neutralization, the race finally began. Max Verstappen, with a very aggressive start, quickly found himself back in the points zone. Leading the race, Lando Norris, as usual, lost the lead in the first corner. George Russell seized the opportunity perfectly.
Fantastic comeback by Max Verstappen
Lewis Hamilton, in difficulty since the qualifying session, was still struggling during the race. The Mercedes driver was having trouble with a car that seemed uncontrollable. Despite his setbacks, he managed to recover and secured the tenth position point.
With increasingly intense rain, the drivers showed perfect control. In doubt, the race direction called for the intervention of the safety car. Some drivers took advantage of this to switch to new tires. However, these were too cold. And with a slow pace, Franco Colapinto was caught off guard and hitched his Williams on the wall. The red flag was raised.
Serious accident involving Franco Colapinto
The unfortunate situation of the Argentinian benefited Esteban Ocon, who had not stopped. At the restart, he was first with Pierre Gasly not far behind him. After a perfect start, Carlos Sainz had his accident. The Ferrari, too damaged, could not continue. Another safety car was needed.
When she stepped aside, Max Verstappen, who had moved up to second, tried his luck at the first turn. He passed the French driver before racing off to victory. Behind, the driver #10 was perfect in very tricky conditions. His teammate resisted to a George Russell who was both aggressive and restrained. The two drivers from Normandy offered a magnificent podium to Alpine.
Lando Norris in a difficult position
Lando Norris, with a meagre sixth position, has lost significant points in the World Championship and his chances are now more than compromised. The fight for the Constructors’ Championship, on the other hand, looks intense.
To note that Alex Albon was unable to start due to his violent accident in qualifying this morning. The damage to the Thai driver’s Williams was too extensive. Nico Hülkenberg was disqualified for receiving assistance from the marshals to return to the track after a mistake.
