Changes in the rankings after Azerbaijan: McLaren, Red Bull and Ferrari in a dead heat

Oscar Piastri surprised Charles Leclerc by winning the Azerbaijan Grand Prix this Sunday, thus securing his second victory of the season and of his Formula 1 career after the one at the Hungarian Grand Prix. McLaren had a remarkable day, not only thanks to this victory, but also by taking the lead in the constructors’ championship this season.

After the victory of McLaren’s driver, the gap of leader Max Verstappen (313 points) shrinks to less than 60 points ahead of Lando Norris (254 points). Despite his defeat against Oscar Piastri (222 points), Charles Leclerc (235 points) remains in the top three but sees the day’s winner closing in at just 13 points. George Russell, thanks to his podium, climbs to seventh place in the drivers’ standings tied with Sergio Pérez (143 points). Also to note, Franco Colapinto scores his very first points in Formula 1 after finishing eighth in Baku. The Argentine crossed the finish line behind his teammate, Alex Albon, and ahead of Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes.

Manufacturers’ standings after Baku

On the constructors’ side, McLaren takes the lead of the championship for the first time since the Australian Grand Prix of 2014. The British team is ahead of Red Bull by 20 points and Ferrari by 51 points. Williams, thanks to its two drivers scoring points, climbs to eighth place, surpassing the French Alpine team. The season seems completely relaunched and the leading drivers can still hope to win the world championship title. For the teams as well, nothing is set in stone yet, and the next meeting will confirm some advantages.
