Double abandonment right from the start for Alpine in Hungary
Both Alpine cars had to retire after only two laps of the Hungarian Grand Prix. They were involved in an accident at the first corner.
The nightmare weekends continue for Alpine. After losing fifth place in the constructors’ standings to McLaren, the French team was hoping to bounce back in Hungary. But, the dark period continued at the Hungaroring.
While they didn’t manage to make it out of Q2, the two cars were supposed to start in the middle of the pack with all the risks that entails. And it didn’t take long for those risks to materialize. An Alfa Romeo, driven by Guanyu Zhou, collided with Daniel Ricciardo, who then made contact with Esteban Ocon’s Alpine, which in turn hit Pierre Gasly.
Third double retirement
Pierre Gasly suffered significant damage to his car, particularly at the rear. The Frenchman retired at the end of the first lap. His teammate did the same a lap later. This is Alpine’s third double retirement this season, following Australia and Silverstone.
Meanwhile, McLaren made an excellent start by taking the provisional second and third places, behind Lewis Hamilton.
“« We need to quickly stop this series that’s happening right now »,” Pierre Gasly exclaimed in the mixed zone.
