Lando Norris: « He went too far, as if desperate »
Lando Norris was forced to retire following his collision with Max Verstappen in Austria. Speaking to the media after the Grand Prix, he regretted the Dutchman's over-commitment.
For those who were expecting a battle between heavyweights, they were not disappointed.
Max Verstappen and Lando Norris have been engaging in a thrilling duel for the past few weekends. The Austrian Grand Prix was the climax of their battle… which unfortunately went too far. This will not be the last time we see the top 2 in the championship fighting on the track… This Austrian episode will surely be a significant event of the season.
A duel taking shape 20 laps from the finish.
Lando Norris was far from the Dutch for much of the race, trailing by about 7 seconds. A missed pit stop by Red Bull changed everything. So, just 2 seconds behind the three-time world champion, Lando Norris came back like a rocket. He faced strong defense from the Red Bull driver several times:
« On my first two attempts to overtake, it was already close. For me, there was no incident, nothing really happened. But twice I had to avoid him while I was already braking. He reacted after my maneuver. It was really on the limit of what is allowed, because once I’m on the brakes, I can’t change lanes. He should look in his mirrors. »
“It was stupid”
Lando Norris had not experienced such a battle against Verstappen until now:
« It’s tough, it’s the race but… It’s what I expected from Max… But he went too far. He seemed a little desperate. I had a good Grand Prix and I won’t change what I did.
He regrets the consequences of this collision in the championship that penalize him more than his opponent.
« On my last attack, what he did was stupid. He didn’t need to tackle me the way he did. He is far ahead in the championship. It doesn’t change anything for him… but for me it changes a lot of things. I don’t think I have much to say to him. »
