A special livery for the BMW Hypercar at the 24 Hours of Le Mans

It’s a BMW tradition. The German brand has often presented Art Cars during the events in which it has participated. This year, at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, it will be car number 20, entered in the Hypercar category, that will benefit from it.

Regarding the team entering BMW in the World Endurance Championship, it was revealed a few days ago. It was designed by Julie Mehretu, an artist based in New York. “I realized that the whole Art Car project was about creating something new, being inventive and pushing boundaries. I see the car as a performative painting. It was created for the track and not for the museum. It was also developed in close collaboration with a team of motorsport and engineering and will only be completed once the 24 Hours of Le Mans are over,” said the artist.

Julie Mehretu drew inspiration from her monumental painting “Everywhen”, which is currently being exhibited at the Palazzo Grassi in Venice as part of a major retrospective, to create this car.

Its abstract visual form results from digitally distorted photographs, superimposed in several layers of dot grids, neon-colored veils, and black markings characteristic of Julie Mehretu’s work. « I saw the BMW in front of the finished painting in my studio and thought about what would happen if the car could move through the image and merge with it. Now, the BMW Art Car is a remix of my painting, and it looks like its grille has breathed in the paint. »
