Formula 1 has a new Grand Prix winner after Lando Norris’s victory in Miami

He had to wait 110 Grand Prix races before finally winning. After achieving 15 podium finishes between the Austrian Grand Prix in 2020 and the Chinese Grand Prix in 2024, Lando Norris became the 114th winner of a Grand Prix in Formula 1 this season in Miami. He is also the first driver to win his first race in the premier category of motor racing since George Russell in Brazil in 2022.

Since his arrival in F1 in 2019, Norris had already had several opportunities to shine. This was notably the case in Sochi in September 2021 when, after taking pole and dominating the race, a poor strategic choice in the final laps following the arrival of rain had dashed his hopes of victory. Two weeks earlier, he had to bow to his then-teammate, Daniel Ricciardo, to secure a McLaren one-two in Monza.

The native of Glastonbury thus joins the Australian among the Grand Prix-winning drivers currently on the grid. There are now 12 of them, which represents 60% of the field. Only Haas and Williams do not have Grand Prix winners among their ranks.

Mercedes (Lewis Hamilton and George Russell), Ferrari (Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz), Alpine (Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon), and Red Bull (Max Verstappen and Sergio Pérez) are the four teams with duos of Grand Prix-winning drivers. Aston Martin with Fernando Alonso, Racing Bulls with Daniel Ricciardo, Sauber with Valtteri Bottas, and McLaren with Lando Norris should also be added to the list.

The winner of the 2024 Miami Grand Prix is now on par with drivers such as Jean Alesi, Olivier Panis, François Cevert, Jean-Pierre Beltoise, as well as Jarno Trulli and Robert Kubica in the F1 record books. Given his current level of performance as well as that of his car, there is no doubt that Norris will quickly surpass his illustrious predecessors.
