At Imola, Ferrari once again lacks strategy, this time in WEC
Favourites to win the 6 Hours of Imola, Ferrari fell flat on its face when the rain arrived. The Italian team missed out on a possible treble on home soil.
There was a triplet in the qualifications. And a big flop in the race. After dominating the Hyperpole, the Scuderia had sent a clear message to the competition. On Italian soil, it will be difficult to catch up with the 499P.
The first laps of the race confirmed this trend with a dominance of the red hypercars. Even with a penalty for car No. 83 from the AF Corse team, the prancing horse cars dominated the discussions. The other prototypes managed to take the lead for a few moments during the pit stops.
Mistakes before and after the rain.
Then, the rain made an appearance. In delicate conditions, the Ferraris seemed very comfortable with slick tires. They were the fastest. While several cars dove into the pits to put on the correct tires, the Reds stayed on track. As the raindrops intensified.
A decision that was questioned shortly after. The grooved tires were eventually faster. But Ferrari took time to call their hypercars, which caused them to drop in the hierarchy. When the track dried, once again, the three cars were recalled late to the pits.
Once the slick tires were fitted, the competitors made short work of the 499P. Cold tires on a tricky track, Ferrari struggled. Porsche and Toyota had no trouble taking the lead.
Antonio Fuoco on fire
Despite a frantic pace, Antonio Fuoco – the pole position man – failed to make it back to the first place. He eventually ended up in fourth position, with a bold move on the Toyota #8 in the final loop of the Emilia-Romagna circuit.
With the aggressiveness of the Italian on his home turf, there is reason to be disappointed in the Maranello clan. Because victory was within reach and maybe even a podium finish with the sister car and that of the AF Corse team. The specialized press might not be lenient with the company.
